Overview:
Over the past week, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania once again dedicated significant attention to Ukraine. This renewed focus was primarily driven by a significant Ukrainian strike that reportedly destroyed a portion of Russia’s air forces. Four of the five most engaged pieces on pro-Kremlin social media platforms centered on Ukraine, using the attack as an argument to critique Lithuania’s foreign and defence policies.
Malign actors mocked President Gitanas Nausėda’s recent remarks calling for unwavering support to Ukraine “until victory,” including the return of all occupied territories. They framed this position as unrealistic and illogical, questioning whether peace in Ukraine is even attainable. These narratives subtly ridiculed Lithuania’s strategic alignment with Ukraine and NATO, portraying it as naïve and reckless.
Alongside the criticism of official policy, Kremlin-aligned voices escalated warnings about internal instability in Lithuania. Some speculated that a civil conflict may soon erupt, claiming the country is failing to learn from Ukraine’s “mistakes”; trust in NATO and Lithuania’s national security was openly questioned.
Particular hatred was directed at the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union, which was labeled a “fifth column” and even compared to a military junta. Such attacks aimed to discredit civilian readiness efforts and undermine public trust in national defense initiatives, portraying them as dangerous militarism rather than patriotic preparedness, and completely disconnected from its people.
