Lithuania Weekly: Local Politicians and European Union

During this reporting week, several Lithuanian media sources with a pro-Russian stance have continued to prioritise domestic news.

by Urtė Andriukaitytė

Main narratives:

  • questioning the European Union and its functionality;
  • general anti-government sentiments;
  • doubts about the transparency of democratic elections;
  • the incompetence of the current government.

Overview:

During this reporting week, several Lithuanian media sources with a pro-Russian stance have continued to prioritise domestic news. Echos about the resignation of Monika Navickienė, Social Security and Labour Minister, continued to circulate online; they were followed by criticism towards the potential candidates for this post. Some Kremlin-aligned media outlets commented and openly questioned the outcomes of the European Parliament elections that recently took place in Lithuania. They not only openly questioned the legitimacy of the results but also used the opportunity to sow doubt about the European Union’s functionality in general and predict a pessimistic future for the entire bloc. This Kremlin-aligned media focus on domestic issues, coupled with negativity towards the EU, aligns with common tactics used by pro-Kremlin actors.
