by Otto Tabuns

Main narratives:

  • Tax policy critiques masking deeper issues of corruption and geopolitical agendas.
  • Allegations of foreign influence within national coalitions.
  • International concerns overshadowing domestic priorities, with a focus on economic impacts.
  • Disparities in the treatment of diaspora communities across nations.
  • Regulatory efforts seen as targeting vulnerable populations without addressing root causes.
  • Leadership and performance anxieties in a geopolitical context influencing national politics.

Overview:

In the examined week, the primary narratives surrounded the corruption and lack of trust within the government as well as the percieved threat by Russia and Russians within Latvia. Most notably, a leader of the opposition party who has himself been linked to Russia in his prior business enterprises and political career Ainars Slesers, is now alleging that there are several Russia collaborators within the leading coalition parties that in the case of an invasion will side with Russia and are currently not working within the best interests of the country. Leading up to the European Parliament elections, more content is now targeting the coalition parties trying to tie scandals of corruption and enhance the lack of trust within the government. In terms of the form of the content, Tiktok remains as the platform that creates most engagement and reaches a larger audience.
