Lithuania Weekly: Shift Towards Ukraine-Related Matters

Last week, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania targeted the country’s support for Ukraine, portraying it as ineffective and corrupt. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was accused of pursuing "utopian objectives" that escalate the conflict, while Lithuania was framed as being drawn into unnecessary militarisation, with citizens allegedly prepared to become "cogs in the war machine." These narratives aimed to erode public support for Ukraine, amplify distrust in Western alliances, and undermine confidence in Lithuania’s foreign and security policies.

Main narratives:

  • Discrediting Ukraine and its effort to win the war;
  • Anti-support for Ukraine;
  • General anti-government sentiments;
  • Support for Ukraine is ineffective.

Overview:

Last week, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania focused on several key topics aimed at fostering division within the country. A dominant theme was Lithuania’s ongoing support for Ukraine, which was heavily criticised. Kremlin-backed outlets questioned the effectiveness of this support, suggesting that much of the aid fails to achieve its intended goals or is subject to corruption. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was portrayed as pursuing “utopian objectives” that allegedly exacerbate the conflict rather than resolve it. These narratives also included claims that Lithuania is being drawn into militarisation, with suggestions that its citizens are being prepared to become “cogs in the war machine,” reinforcing fears of unnecessary involvement in a conflict.

Through these narratives, Kremlin-aligned media sought to undermine public support for Ukraine and its leaders, as well as Lithuania’s government, amplify distrust in Western alliances, and foster scepticism about the legitimacy of Lithuania’s foreign and security policies.
