During this reporting period, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania widely discussed the freshly gathered coalition “Kelkis Lietuva”

by Urtė Andriukaitytė

Main narratives:

  • general anti-government sentiments;
  • the incompetence of the current government;
  • discrediting Ukraine and its effort to win the war;
  • doubts about the transparency of democratic elections.

Overview:

During this reporting period, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania widely discussed the freshly gathered coalition “Kelkis Lietuva”: as the Seimas elections are approaching later this year, Tautos ir teisingumo sąjunga (centrists, nationalists) led by Petras Gražulis, Krikščionių sąjunga (chairman Rimantas Jonas Dagys), the Political Party “Profesinių sąjungų centras” (chairman Kęstutis Juknis), Lietuvos šeimų sąjūdis  (chairman Raimondas Grinevičius) and other well-known public figures agreed to participate in the parliamentary elections together. Gražulis, who was stripped of immunity over homophobic statements and remains one of the most controversial public figures in Lithuania, presented his coalition as the “biggest alternative to the current conservative and liberal elite ruling the country”; Kremlin-aligned media supported this stance. Most of the members are well-known in the country for spreading anti-government sentiments, being intensely homophobic and radically praising traditional values.
