Lithuania Weekly: Kremlin-Aligned Media Exploits Cabinet Formation

Over the past week, Kremlin-linked outlets in Lithuania have fixated on the formation of the new cabinet, using conspiratorial narratives to question ministerial candidates and intensify attacks on President Gitanas Nausėda. Energy sector appointments, particularly involving Ignitis, were framed as corrupt deals benefiting political elites. These narratives, coupled with sweeping accusations of worsening living conditions and government deceit, aimed to erode public trust and fuel disillusionment with democratic institutions.

Main narratives:

  • The incompetence of the current government;
  • The Conservative Party is to blame for everything bad in the country;
  • General anti-government sentiments.

Overview:

Over the past week, Kremlin-aligned media channels have concentrated almost exclusively on spreading anti-government narratives, with a particular focus on the ongoing formation of Lithuania’s new cabinet of ministers. Multiple candidates for ministerial positions were publicly questioned and scrutinized, often in conspiratorial tones. President Gitanas Nausėda faced especially sharp criticism – accused not only of deepening the political crisis but also of violating the Constitution. Some of the most widely shared and engaged headlines included: “Dear compatriots, is it time to consider IMPEACHMENT for a president serving foreign interests and causing a government crisis? Enough is enough.” and “Illiterates at the helm of the state.”

Significant attention was also given to the selection of the new Minister of Energy, with narratives centering around alleged shady deals and the influence of “the conservative clan.” A focal point of this coverage was Ignitis, a major state-owned energy group responsible for electricity generation and supply, portrayed as a stronghold fiercely guarded by specific parties for the benefit of their allies. Kremlin-linked outlets framed the appointment process as evidence that key state assets are being protected from “outsiders” to maintain power and profit.

Throughout the week, broader attacks on the Lithuanian government intensified. Authorities were criticized for worsening living conditions, deceiving the public, and threatening the nation’s future. These sweeping accusations, often unsupported, aimed to erode trust in democratic institutions and sow widespread disillusionment among the population.
