Main narratives:

  • General anti-government sentiments;
  • Estonia’s energy security is being mismanaged.

Overview:

Estonia’s planned desynchronization from the BRELL electricity grid, which currently connects the Baltic states with Russia and Belarus, has been the focus of various speculative and manipulative discussions on social media, where pro-Russian commentators have sought to undermine public confidence in the desynchronization process and sow discord, warning followers to panic and claiming that disconnection from the BRELL grid will lead to significant energy shortages and frequent blackouts in Estonia.

One of the key disinformation narratives is that the country’s infrastructure is unprepared to synchronize with the continental European grid, thereby jeopardizing energy security. However, Estonian officials have repeatedly emphasized that the necessary preparations, including infrastructure upgrades and the installation of synchronous capacitors, are on track to ensure a stable transition. Another piece of disinformation related to speculation is that the desynchronization process will place an excessive financial burden on Estonia, leading to increased electricity costs for consumers who are already under a heavy burden of new taxes and high prices.
