Main narratives:

  • Time to negotiate with Russia;
  • Global powers set the rules;
  • Anti-Ukrainian sentiments.

Overview:

As Estonia celebrated its 107th Independence Day, pro-Kremlin commentators on social media wryly mocked the country’s dependence on external developments and geopolitical turbulence caused by changes in US policy. They engaged in public discussions about whether Estonia’s foreign policy was about to change and whether Western unity and American protection were uncertain. They also posted sarcastic comments about the lack of an invitation to Baltic leaders to discuss the future of European security at a meeting in London. They criticised the Estonian government for providing substantial aid to Ukraine (one of the largest in terms of GDP) without securing Estonia’s vote among the allies.

Pro-Kremlin commentators have also applauded the Trump administration’s approach to negotiations with Russia, as the UN’s symbolic vote demonstrated US support for Russia’s narratives regarding the war in Ukraine. Additionally, there have been ironic comments regarding the appearance of Zelensky, Trump and Vance in the Oval Office, where harsh language was used against Ukraine, which has resonated positively among pro-Kremlin commentators. Finally, they also mocked Kaja Kallas and her low reputation among the new American political establishment, as she was denied a meeting in Washington.
