During the examined week, the narratives primarily focused on domestic issues relating to corruption and Russian language policies.

by Otto Tabuns

Main narratives:

  • general anti-government sentiments
  • the incompetence of the current government
  • blame of alleged russophobia
  • questioning the transparency of the politicians

Overview:

During the examined week, the narratives primarily focused on domestic issues relating to corruption and Russian language policies. Most notably, as an example of the current government’s incompetence and corruption within it, the examined accounts bring up RailBaltica and its progress and costs. The situation in Latvia highlighting corruption is allegedly proven by making a comparison to the costs of RailBaltica in Estonia. In addition, opposition parties aim to create an “us and them” narrative by stating how the region of Latgale is mistreated by being labelled as disloyal to the country due to the sizeable Russian-speaking diaspora. Regarding content, TikTok remains the platform with the most engagement; nevertheless, there has been less activity during the week.
