Lithuania Weekly: Shift Towards Ukraine-Related Matters

Last week, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania targeted the country’s support for Ukraine, portraying it as ineffective and corrupt. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was accused of pursuing "utopian objectives" that escalate the conflict, while Lithuania was framed as being drawn into unnecessary militarisation, with citizens allegedly prepared to become "cogs in the war machine." These narratives aimed to erode public support for Ukraine, amplify distrust in Western alliances, and undermine confidence in Lithuania’s foreign and security policies.

Lithuania Weekly: Ukraine’s Prioritisation over Lithuania

Scrutinised pieces during this reporting week were mainly criticising the prioritisation of Ukraine over Lithuanian issues. Hostile outlets also further undermined Lithuania’s ongoing support for Ukraine, claiming that it “leads nowhere” and accused the government of Lithuania for putting the war in Ukraine first and domestic issues second. Also, Kremlin-aligned media harshly criticised local politicians, questioning their competencies and financial transparency (referring to previously analysed MG Baltic case).

Lithuania Weekly: Diminishing Support for Ukraine

Kremlin-aligned media emphasised continuous criticism of the proposed property tax, rising prices, and increasing crime rates in the country, arguing that it is becoming dangerous to live in Lithuania. These hostile actors also continued to undermine Lithuania’s ongoing support for Ukraine by either backing up their arguments that Ukraine is being prioritised over domestic matters, or by claiming that other countries in the world (primarily, the U.S.) have already withdrawn their support and insisting that Lithuania should follow suit.

Lithuania Weekly: Global Security, Anti-government Sentiments, and New Fundraisers

Alongside mainstream/independent media coverage of ongoing events and widely discussed topics, Kremlin-aligned media in Lithuania further promoted the anti-government narrative. Almost all top stories from this type of media covered the work of the ruling government or specific politicians, as well the prioritisation of Ukraine over domestic issues. Hostile media not only continued to undermine Lithuania’s ongoing support for Ukraine, but also asked rhetorical questions about the need for humanitarian support elsewhere following the Hamas attacks on Israel, such as “how long will we have to wait until another fundraiser will appear to take our money?”.
