Estonia Weekly: Mobilization, Censorship and Sports

This week there was a lot of talk about the 2024 Estonian budget and how this new budget will create more poverty and monetary hardships for the Estonian people. There was also a lot of mention of Prime Minister Kaya Kallas, her meeting with Ukrainian president Zelensky, and how many other politicians agree that her resignation would help the political situation in Estonia improve.

  • News channels are censoring people by not broadcasting program which criticize the state.
  • The government only considers outside military threats as a problem for the country and therefore it increased its military spending without consideration of the poorer people or retirees.
  • The Estonian politicians who signed the article to bar Russians and Belarussians from the Olympic games are Russophobic and proud of it.

Overview:

This week there was more written about the economic state of Estonia and how the government adding more military spending will create more economic troubles for the poor citizens.  There were also articles written about the Estonian politicians’ russophobia due to their signing of an article hoping to bar the Russian and Belarusian athletes from the olympics.  As well as the Estonian government agreeing with Ukraine to search for Ukrainian refugees to send back to Ukraine for mobilization.  There were also claims of censorship when a state funded news channel did not broadcast a program that criticized the state.
